Lady Gaga and Beyonce, with each having nine nominations, lead the nominees for the MTV Video Music Awards this year. They will be awarded in New York City on September 13.
All of Beyonce’s nine nominations were earned from her hit single “Single Ladies (Put A Ring on It).” The nine nominations for Lady Gaga were divided between her two songs “Paparazzi” and “Poker Face,” which were both on “The Fame,” her album released in October. Britney Spears received seven nominations for “Circus” and “Womanizer.”
Kayne West and Coldplay each received four nominations, Green Day received three, while Jay-Z earned two.
There were also several first time nominees this year as well. Asher Roth, a new rapper, is competing with Eminem in the “Best Hip-Hop Video” category. After a hiatus of four years, Eminem has returned to the spotlight. His song “We Made You” received four nominations. Wisin Y Yandel, an award winner of the Latin Grammys, rapper Drake and Kings of Leon received first time nominations as well for their recent videos.
Russell Brand, the comedian and actor, will be hosting the award show’s 26th annual edition. It will air live on September 13 from New York City. Muse, Taylor Swift, Pink and Green Day are confirmed performers. Chace Crawford, star from “Gossip Girl,” Ne-Yo and Katy Perry will present awards.
